Staff

Joanna Pawelkiewicz
Coordinator
416-516-1422 ext. 262

Originally born in Warsaw Poland, Joanna has lived in Canada for more than 20 years.

She has a specialty in Women’s Studies and a Minor in French at the University of Toronto before studying Adult and Anti-Racism Education at the Ontario Institute in Studies for Education. Joanna was very involved in student politics; she was part of an anti-corporate working group at OPIRG and volunteered with a feminist radio collective for five years.
Before coming to the Dream Team, Joanna worked in various social justice oriented projects in areas of food security, youth work, international development, labour rights and violence against women. Her current position as the Dream Team Coordinator allows Joanna to learn from the Consumer/Survivor community and to work with other like-minded people to achieve social change.

Joanna credits exercise, acupuncture, some aspects of CBT (cognitive behavior therapy) as well as family support and meaningful employment for her ongoing recovery from mental illness. Her next steps towards wellness include getting a dog!

Carmen Charles
Marketing and Communications Coordinator
416-516-1422 ext. 263

Carmen was born and raised in Trinidad. She migrated to Canada as a young girl, and attended the University of Toronto where she studied Politics, International Development and Health Studies. She was actively involved in many campus groups and held a variety of leadership roles. Prior to her involvement at the Dream Team, Carmen worked as a Multicultural Project Coordinator. She also worked as a Research Assistant for a branch of the Privy Council where she coordinated an international roundtable on social innovation which featured industry experts from all across the world. Carmen’s interests are broad: they range from social justice, human rights public health, politics theology and spirituality, and international issues. In her personal time, Carmen enjoys trying new foods, dancing, karaoke, Bollywood movies, sandy beaches, Dexter and anything with salt on it.

Testimonials

My favourite part was hearing about the lived experiences of guest speakers. This allowed me to understand mental illness and addictions issues, not just from text books, but from personal experiences
