Esther immigrated to Canada from Kenya as a student to complete Grade 13 and go to university. This was her first time living away from her family, friends and community. She felt isolated, but was determined to do well. She completed Grade 13 and went on to York University where she was befriended by a seemingly harmless religious group which turned out to be a cult. This group gave her a sense of belonging. Upon trying to leave the cult, she had a breakdown. Esther had to drop out of university and was admitted to the Wellesley Hospital psychiatric unit. Once she was discharged from the hospital, she was given permanent supportive housing with Houselink. Her admissions to hospital were greatly reduced. Supportive housing has made a great impact on Esther’s life. She is glad to be able to represent the Dream Team and advocate for more supportive housing.
